2007 AEJP
Gonzaga University, Spokane

The eleventh annual conference of the Association of Editors of Jesuit Publications took place this July at Gonzaga University in Spokane.

Pat Lee, SJ, Gonzaga’s vice president for mission and ministry, spoke to the three dozen communication personnel from Jesuit universities, high schools, province offices, and other locales, about the Jesuits’ upcoming 35th general congregation.

Other presenters:

  • Brian Doyle, editor of Portland, the award-winning publication of the University of Portland, gave a spirited talk about editing and writing.
  • Photographer Brad Reynolds, SJ, spoke about photo editing and selection and also chased participants out and around campus to take photos, later discussed and critiqued in a follow-up session.
  • John Whitney, SJ, the Oregon Province provincial, and consultant Pat Walsh spoke about crisis management—how to keep your head above water during hard times.
  • Gonzaga law school professor Sheri Engleken gave a talk on navigating defamation, copyrights, and other issues of communications law.
  • Whitworth College communications professor Gordon Jackson spoke on ethics and communication.

Participants had a great meal at local Italian place Luigi’s one night and enjoyed a cocktail hour and banquet, complete with a jazz trio and vocalists, on another.
